While hearing a PIL filed after a lawyer was beaten up for appearing in court during a strike, Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya offered to hear the matter in his chambers. The Chief Justice observed that hearing the matter in open court was not “conduicive” and directed the parties to settle the matter amicably.
The PIL had been filed after advocate Jal Unwala was reportedly abused and beaten up by members of the Gujarat High Court Advocates Association (GHAA). The cause of the GHAA’s ire was the fact that Unwala appeared in court despite a strike being called by the GHAA. Furthermore, Unwala and Senior Advocate Saurabh Soparkar’s membership in the GHAA were suspended on the same day.
As per this report:
Senior Counsel Mihir Thakore, appearing for Unwala and Soparkar, pressed for an apology from the GHAA members before an open court for the March 11 incident.
Subsequently, the Chief Justice asked the lawyers to resolve the issue outside the court. He, in fact, offered to conduct the hearing of the matter inside his chamber to resolve the issue before adjourning the matter.
